What are the biggest reptile expos? ›

HERPS Exotic Reptile & Pet Shows are one of the largest reptile expos in the United States. We bring a large selection of reptiles, amphibians, inverts, feeders, supplies, and more to the public. We pride ourselves on having one of the most professional, clean, and fun shows in the country.

Cash is king at reptile expos; not every vendor is going to have the capacity to accept credit cards or mobile payments. Bring cash, ideally in a range of bill types so you can make exact change when possible. At the same time, be aware that if you have the cash, you'll probably spend it.

When you come to one of our local events, you can expect to have access to a wide variety of different reptile and amphibian breeders, who specialize in many popular species like corn snakes, ball pythons, chameleons, frogs, turtles and more.

At any of these expos, the public can see various types of rare animals like rare snakes, lizards, tarantulas, turtles, and more.

A recent article published in the academic journal Animals suggests that bearded dragons–a medium-sized Australian lizard known for their distinctive “beard” of spikes under their chin (pictured above)–are the most popular animal in the exotic pet reptile market, followed by ball pythons and leopard geckos.

Ichthyosaurs (Ichthyosauria)

Until 2024, the largest ichthyosaur was believed to be the Late Triassic species Shastasaurus sikanniensis, at approximately 21 m (69 ft) long and 81.5 t (180,000 lb) in weight, from the Norian stage in what is now British Columbia.

Many reptiles sold in chain pet stores are wild caught (WC) rather than captive bred (CB). Reptiles are probably sick, injured, or malnourished.

Pet-wise, you're always going to find spiders, scorpions & tarantulas regardless of where you go . More uncommon are millipede , centipedes & even praying mantises. The cool thing about reptile shows is that you're never 100% sure on what you're gonna see. It all depends on the size of the expo & the vendors.

Often, supplies for their housing and ongoing care are more expensive than the reptile itself as many species require larger enclosures as they mature and grow. Some will require lighting fixtures with special bulbs that need to be replaced every 6 to12 months.

These animals' suffering begins long before they end up on pet store shelves. PETA undercover investigations have revealed rampant abuse and neglect in the businesses that transport and sell “pet” reptiles.

There are some tarantulas in the pet trade that have venom that is not deadly but that can make you very sick and after-effects can last for a long time. There are other kinds whose bite is no more a problem than getting stuck by a rose thorn of a similar size.

Handling Tarantulas is not recommended; if feeling threatened, they may bite or even run and fall. Even a short fall can cause serious, even fatal injury. Their bite is equivalent to a bee sting but is still painful and some individuals may be especially sensitive; if bitten, seek immediate medical attention.

Squamates. Squamates are the most diverse of all the reptile groups, with approximately 7,400 living species. Squamates include lizards, snakes, and worm-lizards.
